From the JRLA Community Service Syllabus:
Our Mission: Jalen Rose Leadership Academy will empower all scholars to develop the strength of character, skills, and knowledge needed to matriculate, be great in, and graduate from college so that they have opportunities to be successful in the competitive world and to take care of themselves and the people that they love.
Description: Community Service is defined as an activity or event in which scholars are involved in work that serves the community as supervised by an approved non-profit or government agency. The act or event must have a direct, positive impact on the community. Scholars learn more about their community by becoming actively involved in it, honoring their community by donating time and effort, and practicing self-discipline as they are accountable to the people they volunteer and serve.
Pre-Approval: Jalen Rose Leadership Academy has a list of sites that are approved for all scholars to complete community service hours. Lists of these approved sites are available in the College Office and online for Advisors to view. Scholars wishing to complete community service at a different site must receive approval.
To have a new site approved, a scholar must submit the Approval Form to Mr. Bueckendorf. This form can be found in the College Office. This must take place at least one week prior to the start of service. Without at least one week’s notice, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to make contact with the supervisors. Once the new site is approved, the advisor will be notified and the accepted site will be added to the list of pre-approved sites. Scholars cannot serve at a site until they are informed by their advisor that the site was approved.
Requirement: In order to pass this requirement, scholars are expected to complete a minimum of 40 community service hours according to the benchmarks outlined below. All hours must be completed at a pre-approved site or project. There is no limit on the amount of hours performed at each site.
Community service hours for your four years at JRLA are due as follows:
- 9th Grade (First Semester)
· 5 hours total
- 9th Grade (Second Semester)
· 10 hours total
- 10th Grade (First Semester)
· 15 hours total
- 10th Grade (Second Semester)
· 20 hours total
- 11th Grade (First Semester)
· 25 hours total
- 11th Grade (Second Semester)
· 30 hours total
- 12th Grade (First Semester)
· 40 hours total
Deadlines: The 2016-2017 deadlines are as follows:
➢1st Semester: Friday, January 20th, 2017 BEFORE 1:30 pm
➢2nd Semester: Friday, June 16th, 2017 BEFORE 1:30 pm
1.Scholars may complete their hours in two ways:
Volunteer at an approved non-profit organization
Volunteer to participate in a group service project coordinated through JRLA or their Advisory
1.Complete the Community Service form(s) for 2015-2016. These forms are located in the Main Office and the College Office. Additionally, Advisors will have a set of forms.
2. Be sure to fill out the form completely and correctly. Scholars who do not fill out a form completely or fill out a form incorrectly will have one chance to resubmit for credit, within two school days of the form being returned.
3.Scholars must fill out one form for each service performed. Scholars will not receive credit if they fill out only one form with multiple service dates on it.
4.All community service forms must be filled in with black or blue ink. No erasure marks or white-out allowed.
5.Ensure the Form is signed by the site supervisor and your advisor. Forms will be considered incomplete without a signature from both supervisor and advisor.
6.Scholars must submit this form to the main office by 1:30 pm of the Friday following the community service event. Failure to submit by this deadline will result in the hours being voided.
Permission Slips: For all JRLA / Advisory organized projects and events, scholars will be given permission slips that are required to participate. JRLA does not accept homemade/handwritten notes from parents; scholars must have the original permission slip signed by a parent/guardian to go on the trip.
No-Show Policy: It is very important that scholars show up for any event that they sign up for. People are counting on us to provide them with volunteers. If a scholar is unable to make it to a project or event, he/she should:
- Find a replacement
- No fewer than 24 hours in advance, inform the coordinator of the project of the need to cancel
Failure: Should a scholar fail the community service requirement for the first semester, he or she will be required to complete a night school community service class, during which he or she will complete 15 community service hours, which will count towards future promotional and graduation requirements.
Should a scholar fail to complete the community service requirement for the school year, he or she will be required to complete a summer community service class of 15 hours in order to be promoted.
If you have any questions, please see Mr. Bueckendorf in the Deans' Office.
