Support

JRLA was founded in 2011 to help improve the educational landscape in Detroit, but funding a charter school is not an easy task and we need your help!  Detroit charter schools receive less state-aid than other Michigan Public Schools – for example, a student attending JRLA receives roughly $7,400 in state-aid for their education while a high school student in Birmingham receives nearly $12,000 - a quality public education should not be defined by zip code!  JRLA offers Detroit area high school students unique opportunities that they would not receive from any ordinary public school, which means we need to raise significant funds from private sources to bridge the gap and meet our ambitious educational goals.  As a tuition-free school, we need to raise approximately $250K to balance our 2016-17 budget.

One way you can support our efforts is to Sponsor a JRLA Scholar!  A $2,500 donation will help close the opportunity gap and give a JRLA Scholar:
- Real world experiences including college visits and summer internships
- Dual enrollment opportunities at the University of Detroit Mercy and other local colleges
- Extensive ACT/SAT preparation including the Princeton Review Course
- Additional support in reading via daily instruction and Achieve 3000
- And much more...

Through a partnership with Operation Graduation, JRLA purchased a former elementary school that was renovated and expanded to serve 420 high school students.  Unlike traditional public schools, Detroit charter schools do not receive funding from their school districts to purchase, lease, expand or improve facilities. This causes financial challenges that can limit the charter school’s ability to provide appropriate accommodations.  Serving as the landlord and fundraising arm, Operation Graduation is the 501(c)(3) non-profit implementing a comprehensive capital campaign in an effort to minimize the facility costs for the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy. Its mission is to create life-changing opportunities for underserved youth in the Detroit area through scholarships and educational programs.  Operation Graduation and JRLA recently launched the Freedom Fund to raise $2 million to eliminate the building debt so the Academy can become self-sufficient. Naming opportunities are available throughout the building.
